Emergency Management at WSU:
Preparing for emergencies is everyone’s job!
Due to the complexity and scale of a world-class research institution like WSU, effective emergency management cannot solely be managed centrally and is a process that requires the involvement of all units, faculty and staff.
What is WSU doing to prepare for emergencies?
Over the years, much has been done at WSU to help insure the safety and welfare of students, faculty and staff by the departments and personnel assigned to these tasks as well as by the efforts of the units themselves to ensure the safety of their facilities and personnel. A need for a more comprehensive approach led to the requirement that all WSU units prepare an Emergency Response Plan and as appropriate, a Continuance of Operations Plan (COOP). WSU maintains a Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan to help guide the University during major emergency situations.
Unit Emergency Response Plans
Per BPPM 50.39 and Executive Order #25, Washington State University requires all units within the institution, statewide, to prepare emergency response plans. The original template and guidelines published that year provided a structure and information for a unit to prepare a basic plan. These older guidelines and template for preparing units plans were replaced in September of 2006 with a new and updated format that is easier to use and understand. This link will take you to the current template and guidelines for preparing unit plans as required. Please contact the Emergency Management Office if you have questions or need assistance in completing your unit's emergency response plan. If your unit has used the 2002 template, previously, please use the 2006 template when updating your plan.
Continuance of Operations Planning (COOP)
Major emergency situations that impact the University significantly and/or over a lengthy period present many challenges to continuing mission-critical and essential operations. Basic planning can help alleviate the impact of these types of emergencies. The Continuance of Operations Planning template provide guidelines for units to prepare for major and long-term emergencies as well as providing critical information on your units needs to the units within the institution that maintain services such as utilities, technology or security. The COOP template can be accessed below.
